The Directorate employed engineers and architects who conducted research and development activities related to emerging innovative building technologies. There was a need identified to increase the Directorate's client base by publicizing and marketing its products and services.
Solutions
- Analyzed research papers and publications; synthesized and created abstracts of research and development activities.
- Designed and developed TechnoCLIPS, monthly electronic news digest describing ongoing research projects. The publication generated an increased traffic flow to the corporate Intranet site and helped to raise awareness of its research and development activities.
- Produced marketing brochures for suite of facilities management software tools.

Issues and objectives
The department's Digital Simulation Laboratory used software to build realistic images on computer screens from raw materials such as scientific data, detailed building plans, maps, video, computer graphics, and samples of textures and colours. It wanted to demonstrate its capabilities in order to grow its client base and raise its profile.
Solutions
- As lead researcher and technical writer, produced content for double CD-ROM presentation of 3D simulation technologies. Concepts of a complex nature dealing with virtual reality, 3D simulation software programs, and architectural modelling were synthesized and written in plain language for non-technical audiences, enabling the laboratory to get its message out to a wide variety of potential clients.
Canadian Health and Business College, Ottawa, Ont.
Issues and objectives
The Canadian Health and Business College was a start-up venture with initial program offerings in the areas of Dental Assisting, Personal Support Worker, and Medical Laboratory Assistant. There was a need to publicize the imminent launch of the college and recruit students.
Solutions
- Produced separate marketing brochures for each of the new college's programs.

Issues and objectives
The Environmental Services Directorate was involved in research activites related to "green" buildings and the development of sustainable building management practices. There was a need for a publication to disseminate the results of the directorate's research activities.
Solutions
- Created and edited Eco-Buildings Express, an electronic newsletter describing the results of research and development activities around environmentally sustainable building management practices and procedures. The publication was distributed on the directorate intranet site as well as on the wider federal government intranet site.
Society for Technical Communication
Issues and objectives
The Eastern Ontario chapter of the Society for Technical Communication distributes a monthly information newsletter to its members. There was a requirement for a chapter member to fill a vacancy in the position of editor of the newsletter, Stimulus.
Solutions
- As editor of Stimulus,, wrote content for and supervised production of the monthly publication.
- Received Award of Merit from the international headquarters of the Society for Technical Communication in 1998.
M.R.E. Enterprise, Wakefield, Quebec
Issues and objectives
M.R.E. Enterprise had a requirement for an educational lifestyle newsletter that could be distributed to chiropractors across Canada and the United States.
Solutions
- Created and edited The Wellness Conspirator newsletter.
- Researched and wrote feature articles related to health, wellness and the practice of chiropractic.
